DIGC102. Googlestalking.
Week Three Task.
Nacny Baym
After just typing her name into the google search engine I have gain over 21,000 hits.
I have establihed that the Nancy Baym I was directed towards reseraching is an Associate Professor of Communication Studes at the University of Kanas.
The first four results from my research gives me:
1) Her homepage with the Uni- describing her research
2) Her online blog page- Online Fandom
3) A Wiki page about her
4) Her Twitter account
Nancy has a mixture of presences within these first few sites. Here homepage with the uni has a very formal approach,
same with her Wiki site. They label her as merely the pure researcher and academic. While her on Twitter, her last
tweet: “Spent day at zoo with Elaine Lally. Fun to see R see platypus, cassowary and other Aussie weirdness for first time”- clearly extremly personal.
Online Fandom, doesnt show a picture of her, just her thoughts and opinions. It leads onto a Bio witha link which shows her photo with a more relaxed environment.
It also gives a more ‘into the mind’ look behind why she established the blog fourm.
Her blog gives Nancy Baym a very approachable platform for users. She encourages interaction “Comments and tips are enthusiastically welcomed, so chime in!”
and she links to other accademics and background sources on each topic she disscusses, almost like she is wanting people to be totally informed.
THe Uni of Kanas, have linked a biblography of her works and textual research- inforcing and very academic persona of her.
Christine Hine
With her google search, a very formal and professional persona of Christine Hine is established online.
Her first hit takes me straight to her Uni site. She has a Bio in the Deaprtmant of Sociology with the University of Surrey. It tells me that she is an senior lecture of the uni and how to get into contact with her, aswell as a list of her academic publishments from books to journal articles.
The remaining of the the first few google hits are descriptions of her books like Amazon hits and The MIT Press and how to purchase them.
I can’t find any real web content that is possibly craeted by her personaly. This gives her a persona of distant from the actual internet. No socail networking hits and no blog sites came up wityhin the first google page, only her liteature and research. So her content is created by thrird parties, which makes me wonder if she has done this on purpose for a more professional effect or whether she is quite ignorant to her online personality!
